POW-PAK No More – Move To WordPress!

1. INTRODUCTION & DIRECTIVE

When is comes time to move material from one website to another, often the simpler method the better. Use the suggestions below to save your current web pages in order to later populate something new.

  • Start today by saving your POW-PAK materials in another format.

  • Please be aware of deadlines for end-of-life for POW-PAK (12/31/2013).

  • You will have two options for websites with WordPress:
    • Level 1 – A page on the portal site, that you can edit, update, etc.
    • Level 2 – Your own WordPress website, where you’ll be free to take full advantage of all it has to offer. Your site will be linked from the school building portal site.

2. RATIONALE

  1. POW-PAK, currently in use by some teachers as Kenston Local Schools, will no longer be supported as of 12/31/2013.

  2. A new, and modern, website creation tool, WordPress, is offered in its place.

  3. It is imperative that all material that a teacher wants to save, be saved before 12/31/2013.

  4. It is the goal of Kenston Local Schools to provide, and support, a web presence using a WordPress framework by all teachers in order to further the mission and vision of a connected School District.

  5. Access to Teacher websites will come from Building Portal Sites or by direct URL.

  6. Your website functions as a direct extension of your classroom, and can host material, handouts, lesson plans, videos, host class discussions, etc.

3. HOW TO SAVE MATERIAL

The quickest way to save material off an existing website that does not have the capability to export data, is to simply copy & paste the material into other files and folders, like a word processing program, or folders on your network or Google Drive. However, there may be additional media you wish to save.

3.1 HOW TO COPY & PASTE

3.1.1 – USING THE MOUSE

  1. Select the text you wish to save using the mouse.

  2. Right-click on your mouse, select “Copy”

  3. Paste into another text type document by right-clicking again, and selecting “Paste”

3.1.2 – USING KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS

  1. Select the text you wish to save using the mouse.

  2. Use the keyboard shortcut CTRL + C to copy the text.

    1. for MAC Users, use CMD(⌘) + C

  3. Use the keyboard shortcut CTRL + V to paste the text.

    1. for MAC Users, use CMD(⌘) + V

3.2 HOW TO SAVE MATERIAL USING GOOGLE DRIVE

  1. Create a new document, and name it appropriately.

  2. Paste in your text based media from the website.

  3. Google Drive automatically saves your document.

3.3 HOW TO SAVE MATERIAL USING MICROSOFT WORD

  1. Create a new document, and name it appropriately.

  2. Paste in your text based media from the website.

  3. Save the document someplace you can retrieve it, maybe your network drive, or on a flash drive.

3.4 HOW TO SAVE FILES

3.4.1 – SAVING FROM FOLDER ON COMPUTER

You can copy and paste files just like you can text (see above). Depending on where your files are located, it might be beneficial to save all files regarding your POW-PAK website to a separate folder structure on your computer.

3.4.2 – SAVING FROM WEBSITE / LINKED FILE

If you have linked files on your website like PDF files, or from any website, and you want to save it, here’s how to do it:

  1. Right-click using your mouse on the link / file.

  2. Select “Save File As…”

  3. Select where you want to save the file to.

3.5 HOW TO SAVE IMAGES

  1. Right-click on the image you want to save.

  2. Select “Save As…” or “Save Image As…”

  3. Select where you want to save the file to.

    1. Take the opportunity to rename the file during this step if you wish to do so.

3.6 WORKING WITH HYPERLINKS

3.6.1 – SEE THE LINK TARGET

  1. Hover with the mouse over any link on a website.

  2. Look in the bottom corner, left or right, depending on the browser you’re using.

  3. The Link Target will display, showing you where the link is pointing to.

3.6.2 – COPY THE LINK TARGET

  1. Right-click on the link you wish to copy.

  2. Select “Copy Link Address”, or “Save Link As…” or “Copy”

  3. Paste the link into a document.
